Stem Cell and PRP Treatment

Stem Cell and PRP Therapy in Gilbert AZ

The orthopedic team at OSPI offers the latest treatments in stem cell and platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy. These new types of treatments, which utilize the body’s natural healing powers, have been found to be effective in relieving an array of physical problems related to tendon, ligament, muscle, and bone damage. Stem cell and PRP therapy have been utilized in treating various areas of the body, including knees, hips, backs, and shoulders, that people have injured or that are affected by degenerative conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

The Value of Stem Cells

Stem cells are able to encourage faster healing in a variety of situations. One of the most important attributes of these cells is the fact that they are very versatile, which meastem cellsns that they can differentiate into various cell types. Amniotic and bone marrow stem cells are able to form into cartilage, muscle, skin, bone, and cardiac tissue. This allows them to be used to repair injured tissues.

These multipotent stem cells are found in the body’s mesenchyme, which is a type of tissue that is loosely organized and that can develop into connective and skeletal tissues. These mesenchymal stem cells can become osteoblasts (bone cells), chondrocytes (cartilage cells), muscle cells, and adipocytes (fat cells). This attribute makes them highly adaptive and very useful in the field of regenerative medicine.

Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cell therapy involves harvesting stem cells from a human source. There are two primary sources of stem cells: amniotic fluid and bone marrow. Amniotic stem cells are either extracted from a willing donor’s amniotic fluid through a process called amniocentesis. This process does not harm the embryo. They may also be harvested after a woman has undergone a Cesarean birth.

The other process, which is performed through a procedure knows as aspiration, utilizes bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC). A small amount of bone marrow containing stem cells is extracted using a syringe. This procedure, which is performed on the person requiring the stem cell therapy, is short and involves some discomfort.

Once either of these fluids are harvested the stem cells are isolated, and they are often combined with platelet rich plasma, which is isolated from a blood sample taken from the patient. Thus, stem cell and PRP therapy are combined to create a powerful healing effect.

How It Works

centrifuge1Under rigorous conditions and controls, once the fluids containing stem cells and platelets are harvested, the medical professionals at OSPI extract the components from those fluids. Once separated from the other substances, the stem cells and platelets are combined with growth factors and this mixture is injected into the region requiring treatment. The injected mix encourages the creation and strengthening of the type of tissue for which it is targeted, aids in bringing together other stem cells that are already present in the patient, and helps to reduce inflammation.

Many orthopedic doctors are utilizing stem cell and PRP therapy in lieu of highly invasive and risky joint replacement surgeries. The procedure involving stem cell and PRP therapy is relatively non-invasive, involves a low amount of risk, is less expensive, and is quick and efficient. Often this type of treatment will be administered before joint replacement surgery is considered, as the latter type of treatment is seen as a last resort.
