Stem Cell Therapy


Stem cell therapy involves harvesting stem cells from a human source. There are two primary sources of stem cells: amniotic fluid and bone marrow. Amniotic stem cells are either extracted from a willing donor’s amniotic fluid through a process called amniocentesis. This process does not harm the embryo. They may also be harvested after a woman has undergone a Cesarean birth.

The other process, which is performed through a procedure knows as aspiration, utilizes bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC). A small amount of bone marrow containing stem cells is extracted using a syringe. This procedure, which is performed on the person requiring the stem cell therapy, is short and involves some discomfort.

Once either of these fluids are harvested the stem cells are isolated, and they are often combined with platelet rich plasma, which is isolated from a blood sample taken from the patient. Thus, stem cell and PRP therapy are combined to create a powerful healing effect.

How It Works

Once separated from the other substances, the stem cells and platelets are combined with growth factors and this mixture is injected into the region requiring treatment. The injected mix encourages the creation and strengthening of the type of tissue for which it is targeted, aids in bringing together other stem cells that are already present in the patient, and helps to reduce inflammation.

Many orthopedic doctors are utilizing stem cell and PRP therapy in lieu of highly invasive and risky joint replacement surgeries. The procedure involving stem cell and PRP therapy is relatively non-invasive, involves a low amount of risk, is less expensive, and is quick and efficient. Often this type of treatment will be administered before joint replacement surgery is considered, as the latter type of treatment is seen as a last resort.
